Alvord Resting by Jennifer Pratt. 11×14″ oil on panel. $595.00
“It was a hot day out in the Alvord desert. A herd of wild horses with several bachelor
stallions just made their way across the dusty gravel road to a water hole for a refresher.
They knew the route well and traveled in a trail ride-like singe file to the hole. I noted
their bonds and communication, staying close, but play-fighting every so often. Smoke
haze and rock formations inspired the shapes and colours represented. During my visit
the sky was a rose glow from California fires burning further south. The rock face of
Steens Mountain above the Alvord is a sharp, angular comparison to the long flat of the
desert below.”

Silver by the River by Jennifer Pratt. 9×12″ oil on panel. $495.00
“Referenced onsite from Salt River Wild Horses, Arizona. This grey stallion made
multiple river crossings during my visit. He would get into the occasional scuffle with a
few other bachelors, but the heat seems to keep most of the horses subdued in the
hottest times of the day.”

Roan by the River by Jennifer Pratt. 9×12″ oil on panel. $495.00
“Referenced onsite from Salt River Wild Horses, Arizona. The horses line the sandy
riverbank alternating their time napping in the shade with dips into the water to cool off.
The river is refreshing respite from the hot, dry Arizona sun for horses and humans
alike. Flotillas of humans floating by get the occasional show as they float by.”

Sagebrush Zain by Jennifer Pratt. Framed 11×14″ oil on panel. $525.
Inspired by my references of my trip to South Steens HMA, summer ’23. It was getting close to midday, I was feeling the summer heat rising. I contemplated giving up on finding horses. Instead, I decided to take a small dusty road off the main path and see what I could find. I was pleasantly surprised to discover two horses grazing in a big open field. One mare, one stallion. Despite my great distance, I could tell these horses were not accustomed to seeing people. The stallion was very attuned to where I was. Slowly and carefully I maneuvered around my car with my tripod and notebook. I didn’t want to scare or disturb. It’s these quiet moments where I feel like it’s a great gift to be able to have a window to watch, but not intrude. I worked quickly and didn’t stay too long so they could enjoy their grasses in the summer sun. This is the first painting in the sequence of backcountry stallion Zain.
